Sylvania was founded by General David White who acquired the title to a considerable tract of land which would become Sylvania. Sylvania was incorporated into a village in 1867 and reached city status on January 1, 1961. In the 2010 Census, our population was 18,965. Our largest employer is Flower Hospital.

The city neighbors Toledo to the east and is easily reached via US 23 and I-475, offering quick access to the Ohio Turnpike and I-75. Detroit Metropolitan Airport is less than one hour away and Toledo Express Airport is located 10 miles southwest of Sylvania. Sylvania is served by TARTA which makes connections via bus to the Greater Toledo Metropolitan area.

The city is administered by a Mayor/Council form of government and has a fulltime professional City Police Department and a fire department which serves both the city and township.
